Practice

Did you watch Grease live? I’ve been enjoying these productions in recent years, The Sound of Music, Peter Pan and The Wiz. Grease seems to be the most technically difficult; there were the quick costume changes and set pieces, and they had to shuttle the cast between different sound stages. Besides the rehearsals for the cast, it took a lot of practice for the tech crew to keep everything running smoothly.

Religion is something else that we practice. We don’t think of it as a performance, but we repeat some things so we know them by heart. Affirmations are said over and over again to bring them from a wish to reality. In our spellwork, we say our petitions in order to bring a change in others, our situations, and in ourselves.

Several members of the Spellmaker family have theatrical experience. Any surprise there? Magic is in our blood!

Snow and Damballah

I don’t have a photo of a snake in a tree, so this will have to do. There are no snowstorms in Haiti, but the snow evokes Damballah for me for two reasons.

Damballah’s color is white. Clean, pure, and calming, he also prefers offerings of white foods, such as eggs, milk, and cucumbers.

The other thing is the quietness. Besides not having many cars on the road or people outside, the snow seems to absorb sound. Damballah embodies peace, and does not communicate with words.

The Process or the Product?

I took a silversmithing class today, an intro where we made some simple rings. Confession time: I took a series of classes in silver, but it was right after I got out of school, so it was many years ago. I moved shortly after that and didn’t go any further with it. Today’s class was a good refresher, and I learned a great deal of new things, too.

The teacher was pleased that everyone in the class was working diligently on their projects. Some people in her experience will expect her to do the work for them. It’s an odd approach, because the cost of the class is more than it would be to buy the items we made. There is certainly a time and place to hire an expert to do the work for you. But what is it you want out of a class: to learn the process, or just to have the product?

A few months back, I showed Mambo a piece of amber that I have, and she thought it should be set in silver. With a few more classes, I might be able to do that myself. Besides my previous experience, I think I did well in the class because I offered it up to Ogoun. Working metal, fire, hammers — it’s all in Ogoun’s domain.

From Intention To Transformation

We all know the New Year brings about talk and thoughts of resolutions. So, how do we get past the feelings of intention and turn them into transformation? What change do you want to achieve? There is a strong pairing between wanting to make a change and transforming yourself to implement the change. This strong pairing is bound by timing. The bottom line is the time has to be right. You have to know when the want to change is strong enough to put forth the dedication required to change. This dedication has to be stronger than the status quo. For instance, if one has the desire to stop smoking, the desire to stop must consistently be stronger than the desire to continue smoking. This consistency must be stronger until the desire to smoke is manageable in day to day life.

The timing of this true and strong desire may or may not hit at the New Year. This timing continues to evolve as one mentally prepares for the change by truly accepting and committing to the change. When your timing is right, you’ll know it and that is when you need to harness its power and put it into action.

New Year Traditions

Voodoo New Year is November 2nd, and I also like to do something for January 1st. Spellmaker has a nice collection of baths, a hex removal spell kit, and house blessing kit. Baron Samedi is a natural for new beginnings, but I opted to do General Ogoun’s Crimson Power Bath Kit this year. I was feeling weary with some family business, and feeling invisible among friends, so I’m working on strength and presence this year.

It’s early in January, so don’t feel that you’ve missed the opportunity — you can do spellwork at any time. Besides, we have another New Year celebration coming up in a month. Chinese New Year is Monday, February 8th this year, starting the Year of the Monkey. It’s the Red Fire Monkey, all the more reason to honor Ogoun!
