Advent

While full-blown Christmas decorations have been around since October, we are only just entering Advent. Advent is the time of preparation for Christmas, and I realized that it also relates to spellwork.

Many of us are in a waiting period, where we have done our spells but have not yet seen what we are asking for. But are we prepared for our desires to manifest? Have we made room? 

When I was not employed, I needed to be ready to go for a job interview or if I was called for a temp assignment. I’m not a morning person, but I had to maintain a schedule so I would be alert and ready in the morning. I needed a wardrobe for work, that fit and would look professional, and I needed transportation to get to whatever job was coming to me.

For love work, the loss of one’s Heart’s Desire can be depressing and result in withdrawal from many things. Are you ready if your HD knocked on your door right now? I don’t mean having dinner ready and lots of scented candles and mood music, but simply general maintenance of your home and yourself to be welcoming.

This is what it means to prepare room, not only for the arrival of Baby Jesus but for all the things you wish to have in your life. Don’t wait for New Year’s resolutions; start now. Start a new good habit each week, and be ready for the good things to come.

Diversity

I’ve been working for a Big Company for three years now, and enjoying it — which surprises me. When I first joined the workforce, I didn’t think I would fit into the buttoned-up atmosphere of most large corporations. Admittedly companies are more casual now, away from the “dress for success” uniformity of the late 20th century.

Something I appreciate very much is the diversity of people. The office recently changed to an open arrangement, with desks in close quarters and no walls. It’s distracting and annoying, but also causes a closer relationship with people I might not have gotten to know otherwise. We chat, we overhear each other, we play the lottery together some weeks.

With all the terrible things happening in the world this past year, I have a better sense of the connections we all have to them, and the connections we don’t have. I know the stereotypes and “otherness” of different groups, and sometimes I see those characteristics. Above that, though, these are people I’m connected to through work. I’m connected to their friends and families through their stories, and they run the gamut of experiences.

Before this job, I worked at a place where I did not expect to find myself. The politics were opposite of mine, but I took the temp job because I needed the work. I realized that everyone wants the same basic things, but we have different ideas on how to get there.

Children

My plan to get the family together continues to be a challenge. I’m realizing that children of different ages are going to have very different needs and attention spans. It’s true of adults as well, where divisions might be seen in decades rather than years. But right now I’m thinking of the toddlers, those who can’t sit still and are in constant motion.

In Voodoo we have the Marassa, twins who can double the power of our work. Ancient and wise, they are also children, served with toys and candy. I think of the childlike simplicity and sense of wonder that the Marassa must have. Besides there being two of them, they have that amazing energy.

Gathering Together

Wish I was as skilled as that border collie!

I’ll be visiting family out of town for the holidays, and I’m trying to come up with something everyone can do together. There will be close and distant relatives as well as some friends I'd like to see. Late fall/winter weather being what it is, I can’t really plan on doing something outdoors. Already I’m getting negatives due to preferences and work schedules.

People are so scattered, sometimes it seems impossible to get together just for the sake of enjoying each others’ company. I think it’s worthwhile to try, though. Even if it’s just for an afternoon, I hope to be able to find something we can all enjoy!

I would be so upset!

Remember class rings? When I got mine in high school it was too small and had to be reordered. That meant everyone in my class had their ring except for me. We had a tradition where we would get different people to turn the ring, until we got to the number that equaled the year of graduation. I decided to make the best of it, so I took the pull-tab from a can (remember those?), put it on, and had my classmates turn it. It was funny and I was able to enjoy the tradition the same time as everyone else.

Then one of my closest friends said she would have been really upset if it had been her ring that did not fit. And she said it over and over, any time that she saw me with that pull-tab ring. I didn’t mind her having an opinion, but it seemed that she wanted me to be upset, too. Did she think I was not honest about it? The lighthearted approach apparently did not sit well with her.

I don’t know why I remembered that story. Generally it’s a good thing to consider other people’s feelings or points of view, and often we will tell people about other ways of seeing things. Usually, though, it’s a matter of cheering someone up or looking at the positive side of things, rather than the other way around. Sometimes I find myself in a bad or inconvenient situation where being upset does not help. Say a flight is running late — I can’t do anything about it and the people who can are aware of it and doing their best. Keeping a pleasant disposition might be the best I can do.

I can also ask Papa Legba for open doors and smooth paths, and he is a Lwa who always has a positive outlook.
