Fet Ghede is coming up! Similar to All Souls Day or Dia de los Muertos, it’s a time to remember and serve our ancestors. In Voodoo we can serve our ancestors at any time, but this is the time of year that the veil is the thinnest.
Some people came to my neighborhood today. Their bird got loose, a cockatiel, and we could hear him in the trees of the backyard. I don’t know if they had any luck luring him down today, but I did remember an uncle of mine who had cockatiels, too.
This uncle was a drinker, so I poured him a glass of scotch and asked him to help the people find their bird. I remember that he had also lost birds when they flew away, but he lived in a much warmer area than I do.
Today was a give-and-take sort of a day. I was reminded of my uncle and took the opportunity to offer him something. And then I also made a request of him, which I may not ever know if it was successful or not.
As we enjoy Fet Ghede and the holidays coming up in the next few months, we can savor the memories of our ancestors and ask them to join us again for celebrations. And remember, they don’t have to be direct ancestors. Unrelated people who were close friends or mentors can also be honored and served.
Love, Khouzhan Lucy
