Earlier this week I was thinking of Karen, an old co-worker who was also a friend. We lost touch and, realizing that she has an uncommon last name, I let Google do its magic. Sadly, instead of a facebook profile I found her obituary.
Karen had a side-business as a pet sitter, and would go out at lunchtime to feed and walk animals. Eventually she quit the office job to work full-time in pet care. The obituary described her life-long love of and caring for animals, and even when she moved to another city she kept the business with the same branding.
Thinking about it, Karen probably had a lot of Papa Legba in her. She also had a wicked sense of humor and was a trickster, maybe a bit more Loki than Legba. She was also a charmer and I could see how well she related to people as well.
Oh, you thought I was going to talk about Leonard Nimoy, didn’t you?
It’s upon someone’s passing, particularly that of a celebrity, that we get a clear picture of their life’s accomplishments. While many entertainers have the gifts of LaSirene, I think Nimoy was also solidly in the Papa Legba camp. Of course I had to find a photo of him with a dog, as he was also an animal lover! In his most famous role of Mr. Spock on the original Star Trek, we could see how his “other”ness offered unique benefits to the Enterprise crew. He demonstrated intelligence and direct communication. He narrated “In Search Of,” a show about various phenomena, including an episode on Voodoo.
On the artistic side, Nimoy was a photographer and published several books. The Full Body Project celebrated the beauty of large women, another “other” group of people brought to light and appreciated.
When contemplating these passings, I had two thoughts. One is to dig a little deeper with the people you know. I’ve been to a few memorial services now where I realized I did not know the person was into a particular topic, and wished I could chat with them about it. The other is, are we living our values? Does our work, hobbies, circle of friends, etc., reflect our spirituality and shape the world into a better place?
Love, Khouzhan Lucy
