December 8th is the feast of Mary’s birth. I’ve always found it interesting that there are so many aspects of Mary, each with their own strengths and personalities. It speaks to her universality, that she can be relevant to people of many different backgrounds. The quote above, to me, relates to Voodoo; that we have female Lwa as well as male Lwa. Several of them, particularly the Erzulies, are syncretized to Mary. Serving them is a nice way to observe Advent, the preparation for Christ’s birth. Lighting candles in an Advent wreath, observing a calendar, or your daily tasks can be offered up.
