This week’s blog is inspired by War on the Rocks:
“Looking to crack open a novel at the beach this summer? Look no further than this list. Our contributors offer their favorite fiction about war, foreign affairs, and intrigue.”
The interesting thing about their list (and other books mentioned in the comments) is that they reflect so many faces of war: battles, but also the impact on families at home. Strategies and conflicts can be found in historical fiction or fantasy. Spy novels and mysteries are part of it, too.
All of these things are aspects of General Ogoun, the warrior Lwa. When I’m reading a well-written battle scene, I can feel his presence. With the current conflicts going on in the world, it can seem kind of wrong to read books that celebrate war. Wars have been a part of the human condition since ever, and we can gain insight from authors who have lived through it. Negotiation and diplomacy are also important to know, hopefully to avoid wars in the future.
Meanwhile this peacenik enjoys being an armchair warrior through a good book.
Don’t forget the ritual to Ogoun, on Thursday July 31st!
Love, Khouzhan Lucy
