General Ogoun!

When I am blogging about a particular LWA, I always ask he or she to guide me and communicate what they would like me to write.  Well Ogoun is easy; he is a very happy to tell what he wants to say.

First, he is your warrior; he is in place for everyone for everyone to call on.  He is happy to help you with quandaries at work and at play.  He can help you with any legal matters, he also help your with lots of other stuff too. 

Ogoun can help you to overcome you own short comings because he is motivational.  If you are kind of sloppy or a procrastinator, he is your man.  If you are shy and need courage, he can help with that too.

Basically any obstacle you face whether it is personal or public, Ogoun is your front line guy.

Agwe is certainly a regal type of lwa. He is said to live with La Siren in a lavish underwater palace. He is most often pictured as a light-skinned or mulatto - the hallmark depiction is his sea-green eyes! His wife is La Sirene, the sea-aspect of the Goddess of Love, Erzulie. As La Sirene Erzulie is Agwe's legal wife; but as Erzulie, her constant companion is Ogoun, the hero god of war. Ogoun is a deity of fire. Legend has it that there is a constant feud between Agwe and Ogoun, not only because of the incompatibility between water and fire, but also because La Sirene is chronically "en affaire" with Ogoun.

Dream A little Dream!!!

Did you know Abraham Lincoln attended his own funeral in a dream?  Mark Twain predicted his brother’s demise in a dream.  Thousands of people dreamed about the Titanic sinking.  Alright, these are not all positive things but they happened in dreams.

Dreams are a wonderful way to receive communication from beyond.  While dreams are not always specific like the winning lottery number, they can show you people and things.  Sometime interpretation is needed and sometimes it is blatant.

Cocktail hour with LaSirene and Capitaine Agwe

If you can’t participate at this exact day and time, that’s alright, but ANY TIME is a good time for honoring LaSirene and Capitaine Agwe and an easy way to do it is by simply spending some minutes with them on a Cocktail Hour. They both like champagne, soft drinks and white rum. If you want to be fancier, below is a recipe, that they will really love!

Honeydew melon bellini

Ingredients

5 cups of diced honeydew melon, about ½ of a large melon

2 tablespoons lime juice

Sugar to taste based on the sweetness of the  melon

1 bottle of chilled prosecco, champagne, cava or other sparkling wine

Instructions

Combine the diced honeydew melon with the lime juice and sugar in a blender and blend until you obtain a smooth puree.

Strain the puree, chill for at least 30 minutes or until ready to use.

Pour the honeydew melon puree into champagne flutes, no more than half full.

Add the prosecco or other sparkling wine, pouring it gently to avoid making a bubbly mess. 

Stir lightly and serve immediately.

Cold snap!

Well, maybe it’s more of a no-longer-a-heat-wave snap. It’s still warm, it’s still summer, but I can definitely feel fall approaching. And we have a couple of great traditions for late summer.

I remember the first year I made Love Potion #9. I went into the tea and ginseng shop at almost closing time on the 8th – they had already closed out the cash register for the day. Luckily I was able to get my ginseng for cash and I learned a good lesson about planning ahead. The ingredients for the potion are not all that rare, but depending on your area it may mean ordering ahead. So I’m telling you about it now!

We make Love Potion #9 on September 9th at 9 a.m., so the first thing to do is tell your boss about that “appointment” and that you will be a little late to work. I find that the potion takes about an hour to make, including some time for it to cool a bit.

The ingredients can be pricey, but you can enjoy the rest of them yourself or even make a nice offering to Erzulie Freda that morning. The potion is a wonderful gift to us from Erzulie and all the Love Goddesses, and is meant to be used! Even if the outlook seems bleak, you may find an opportunity to use it will come up later. In the fridge, the potion will keep for a year.

The other tradition is the Chinese Harvest Moon Festival. Since the date is based on the Chinese lunar calendar, the western date is different every year. In 2013, it falls on September 19th. Next year, 2014, it falls on the 8th! You can make the moon cakes yourself or get them from an Asian grocery – the cakes are something else that might need to be ordered if there is not a store near you.
