Teenagers are great! I was talking to my friend's son the other day, and he has an interesting hobby. The funny thing is, teenagers sometimes are wary that an adult is patronizing rather than actually interested in a topic. But I was asking a lot of questions and learned quite a lot from him. He collects antique knives and tools and has learned to sharpen them. Including machetes!
A machete is a good item to have when serving Ogoun. It becomes "his" machete, and I can get into his power when I handle it. I can dance with it or make chopping motions as I "heat up" with Ogoun. One of my favorite things to do, though, is to sit and sharpen the machete as a meditation, a quiet way to serve Ogoun, a time to contemplate a situation and ask for help in making a plan.
The sharpening stone I use came with oil, but I would usually use a few drops of the oil that came with Sister Bridget's lamp ritual to Ogoun. The oil helps keep the motion smooth, and contains the microscopic bits of metal that come off when sharpening something. I found, though, that when the oil dries afterward it can become a bit gummy. (I was able to remove it by soaking the stone and scrubbing it.) The gummy oil will fill in the spaces on the stone and make it less effective.
What I learned about from the friend is waterstones. Usually from Japan, they are used with water instead of oil, and are easier to clean. I don't have one yet (they are kind of expensive) but I think I will try water on my stone for now. I can still use the lamp oil to shine up the blade afterward.
A note of caution, give something to Ogoun before you sharpen your machete. If you accidentally cut yourself, you can direct him to the food, because you don't want to give him your own blood. Ogoun likes raw or rare meat, but vegans do not despair! He also likes hot peppers and mangoes. And rum! The warrior loves his rum!
Please join us for a public, online ritual to Ogoun in just a few days, Thursday July 25th, at 9 PM Eastern time, 8 Central, 7 Mountain, and 6 PM Pacific. See the link for details. Send in your prayer requests if you wish, help others with your prayers, and get to know Ogoun better.
Love, Khouzhan Lucy
