Bad habits are compounded over time and become something you’re not satisfied with about yourself. The question is how to break the bad. Success comes with good habits and failures are results of bad habits. Developing good habits and breaking bad ones, is much easier said than done. It could mean a different way of thinking and having that translate to a different way of living. For example, a lot of people go through life reacting and under the control of external forces within our environment because that’s what they know to do. They don’t know how to get out of that rut and create their life they want to live as opposed to constantly reacting. Here are some ways to live the life you want.
- Take responsibility of your life and quit being the victim.
- Believe why you want to live the life you desire. If you have a reason to improve, you can find out how.
- Believe in yourself that you will be successful in this change. “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re right.”- Henry Ford
- Behavirial researchers say habits are made of: a cue, a routine and a reward. The routine is the root cause for bad habits.
- Try changing your routine that gives the same reward. For example, one might drink alcohol because of the feeling it gives. But the adverse effect it has on your life is what you want to change. So, you’ve got to find something else that gives you that feeling, which could be a sense of accomplishment you have when you get things done because you’re not drinking.
- Interrupt patterns that lead you into the bad routine. For example if you are trying to stop the routine of eating before bed put a can of dog food next to the snack to remind you that you’re about to follow the same ole pattern.
- Celebrate your accomplishments and success. Reward yourself with something good.
- Tell people you trust about your habit change so they can be a supporting factor. This should be people you’re around a lot so they can help provide constant encouragement and support.
- Follow the new good habit for at least 30 days. This will condition it to a true habit.
