Legba at the Library

A few days ago I went to the library and “offered it up” to Papa Legba. As the master of all language and communication, he loves books- especially old ones! I picked up a book about mythology, took a seat, and started to read. I read for a while; it was a very good book. 

“Honor to you, Papa Legba,” I whispered, turning to a different chapter about African mythology. I found myself now reading about Papa Legba!

I had a huge grin on my face. It was a wonderful reminder that the lwa can be with us anywhere and at anytime! Thank you for that delightful experience, dear Papa!

Want Versus Need

When doing spell work and asking the Lwa for assistance in a certain situation, it is important to realize the Lwa will do what is best for you. That might not be the same thing you want at this time, but once you get what’s best, you’ll understand. It always reminds me of some lyrics by The Rolling Stones: You can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometimes you just might find, you get what you need.

Below are lyrics to a song my friend really likes. It is called "fall into me," by Brantly Gilbert. I was listening to it in the car today on my way to lunch, when I realized it is the perfect song describing what we sometimes go through during the waiting period, and how things are for the person on the other side of this. Clearly, you love this person, or you wouldn't have put in all the time and effort to do the kits, the adjunct work, the waiting....but you can't just tell them, no matter how much you want to. You need to give them the time and the space to be comfortable with those lovey feelings. This isn't always easy, but we have to remember how hard it is for them (remember, you know why they are being all weird, they don't). I especially think he hits the nail on the head when he says "Its time like these when patience means everything."

Feel'in the Karma

Recently, I was at the grocery store picking up a couple of things. While waiting in the checkout line I noticed the woman in front of me. She was a little older than I but attractive. She seemed to be in a bad mood and was being rather short with the cashier who was new and not the fastest in the world. I felt bad for the guy. The woman left in a huff and I moved forward to the checkout counter.

After checking out and getting home, I was putting away the few items I had picked up when I noticed a few extra items. In one of the sacks were the bitchy lady’s frozen potatoes...two bags of them! I actually considered taking them back for a moment, but realized a couple of things. First, I'm not driving all the way back to the store using my gas and spending my time for two bags of frozen potatoes. Second, maybe if that woman had not been in such a tizzy to get out of the store, the new cashier would have remembered to bag her frozen potatoes. Karma took her potatoes away and gave them to me :) and I had yummy hash browns for dinner!

All’s Well That Doesn’t Always End Well…

Recently, a little blue envelope appeared in our mail box with our address but addressed to someone else. I decided to do the “neighborly” thing and try to find out which one of my neighbors the card belonged to. I knocked on a couple of my neighbors doors, but no one answered. So I decided to try and look up the person it was intended for on the internet. After two days of internet searching during my lunch hour, I finally found them online. Excited that I finally figured out who the card went to, I put the card in their mailbox as soon as I got home. I had done my good deed for the day. All was well.

The next day, I came home from work and was talking to my husband in the kitchen, and looked down at the counter where the mail was. And there to my dismay was the same little blue envelope. “You have got to be kidding me!”, I exclaimed. “I just delivered that thing to the neighbor the day before!”. Apparently, either our neighbors are senile and did not realize the card was really addressed to them (probably not the case), they just looked at the address and realized it wasn’t their address, or the people it was intended for simply didn’t live there any longer. Whatever the case, I once again was given the responsibility to get this little blue envelope to its rightful recipient.

After additional failed attempts to locate the actual recipient, I ended up having to write, “return to sender, not at this address” on the envelope and send it back to the original sender. The moral of the story is, things are not always going to go as planned. We have good intentions, but they don’t always work out. Sometimes we try and succeed; other times we try and fail. And that’s okay. We chalk it up to it being an experience and that we tried our very best. In the end, no matter how it turns out, trying our best is all that matters.

St. Barbara's Day

December 4th was the feast day of St. Barbara. As the patroness of artillerists, St. Barbara is a feminine face of General Ogoun, the warrior Lwa.

When I was going to learn my Met Tet, the Lwa who rules my head, I was hoping for one of the lovely ladies amongst the Lwa. As it turned out, it was not, but my Met Tet is the perfect fit!

There are lots of things we might hear or read about the Lwa, sometimes gender-related regarding who they will help. One of these is Erzulie Dantor, an advocate for women and a protective mother. She will most certainly help men, too, and is good to petition for matters of love. Don't forget the ritual to Erzulie Dantor, to be held on December 6th!
