The Great Simbi Makaya!

Spellmaker’s Spiritual Power Prayer Group is ringing in 2013 in a powerful way! We will be honoring the great lwa, Simbi Makaya in a free online ritual! Simbi Makaya is “the magic man"; he can bring his magickal might to help a situation. Because he is such a powerful lwa, it is good to petition for his help in serious situations as opposed to more frivolous ones. Something like "please help me find the best outfit for the party" may not be the best choice.

New Year - New Luck

As a new year is quickly approaching, it is hard not to think of all the things that happened – specially the bad stuff.  There is an answer to a better more fruitful year.

Intentions Into Transformations

 

We all know the New Year brings about talk and thoughts of resolutions. So, how do we get past the feelings of intention and turn them into transformation? What change do you want to achieve? There is a strong pairing between wanting to make a change and transforming yourself to implement the change. This strong pairing is bound by timing. The bottom line is the time has to be right. You have to know when the want to change is strong enough to put forth the dedication required to change. This dedication has to be stronger than the status quo. For instance, if one has the desire to stop smoking, the desire to stop must consistently be stronger than the desire to continue smoking. This consistency must be stronger until the desire to smoke is manageable in day to day life.

The timing of this true and strong desire may or may not hit at the New Year. This timing continues to evolve as one mentally prepares for the change by truly accepting and committing to the change. When your timing is right, you’ll know it and that is when you need to harness its power and put it into action.

Twelve Days

While retailers think Christmas takes up all of December (and all of November, and part of October...), the Twelve Days of Christmas actually start with Christmas Day and end with Epiphany, January 6. That is the day the Three Kings arrived, as it took them twelve days to travel.

Good King Wenceslas looked down, on the Feast of Stephen...

The 26th is Boxing Day, also the feast of St. Stephen. Possibly named for donation boxes at churches, it evolved into a day to give to one's servants or the poor. Servants had to work on Christmas, but then could spend the 26th with their own families, so they brought home boxes of food. I don't personally know anyone who has servants these days, so it can also be observed by donating a box of non-perishable food or other gifts to charities.

The 28th is the feast of the Holy Innocents. Hearing that a King was born, King Herod ordered all the male babies in Bethlehem to be executed. The Holy Family avoided this with their escape into Egypt. The massacre happened after the arrival of the Three Kings, but the babies, the first Christian Martyrs, are honored this day.

January First is the feast of the Holy Name of Jesus, or the Solemnity of Mary.

Various Saints' feast days are also observed during this time, including St. Elizabeth Ann Seton on January 4th. So if you ever think the Christmas season is over, remember it's just beginning!

A Season for Singing!

This weekend, some friends gathered for dinner and to sing Christmas carols. We did not go door-to-door, but we did cover most of the classics. This is definitely something that can be offered up to the lwa — there are so many possibilities!

LaSirene supports singing and music, and if you sing about three ships, Capitaine Agwe is there as well. Khouzhan Ann wrote about bringing Gran Bwa into the house — we have Oh Christmas Tree and Deck the Halls! Lights, drums and bells all remind me of General Ogoun. Mary is syncretized with Erzulie, and the baby Jesus is linked with the child aspect of Papa Legba. Legba would also be pleased with songs about toys and travel (In a one-horse open sleigh), and Santa Clause reminds us of the old man side of Legba. 

Gathering with friends and family is a way to share ancestors' traditions, such as the latkes one friend made for everyone. And should auld acquaintance be forgot, Baron Samedi and Maman Brigitte can remind you.

Happy New Year xoxo

I not sure about you but 2012 was not my finest year, I had a minor surgery, a flu, strep throat, an HD that won’t speak to me and my low commission that forced me to get a second job.  Needless to say, I  cannot wait for this year to be over.  But I think the hardest thing this year was the loss of our dear Sister Candi. 

I had the opportunity to spend time with Sister Candi on three different occasions in Albuquerque, NM.  I wanted to blog about Sister Candi long ago, but couldn’t muster up the strength and didn’t know how to pay homage to someone so special. 

So here is to you Sister Candeleria.  You are a treasure to all of us, you are missed and will never be forgotten.  You are brave, loyal, loving and loved.  You are irreplaceable on this Earth.

Don't Give Up Hope...

On days like today, when you hear about tragic events such as what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Connecticut, it's easy to lose faith in people and fall into the train of thought that people are evil. I found myself thinking to myself today, "What the hell is wrong with people?". The news in general often leads me to this train of thought. I can't imagine the sense of loss the families of the victims must be feeling. It leads me to a feeling of hopelessness because I don't feel like I can do anything on my end to help.

This isn't entirely true. I can light a candle and say a prayer for the victims and their families. I can not allow myself to fall into the frame of thinking that everyone is evil; because they are not. I can do my part to be kind and helpful to others so they too do not lose hope in humanity. And we can ask others to say prayers for anyone that suffers from such a horrific loss.
