We live on a planet of water. Earth has the largest surface ocean
of any planet we know of. About 71% of the world’s surface is covered by oceans
and seas. In day to day life, it is easy to forget the awesome power and beauty
of the ocean. In honor of our upcoming prayer ritual to Capitaine Agwe and
LaSirene, here is something that serves as a potent reminder!

Scientific Visualization Studio created this animation of the
surface currents of our oceans. It’s called Perpetual
Ocean and is assembled from a huge amount of satellite, on location,
and computational data. This is the surface current flow of oceans around the
world from 2006 to 2007. The white lines are the currents, and the darker blue
colors of the water represent bathymetry (the fancy word for misnomer “ocean
topography”).
Looking at the images and the video, I am reminded of the
magnitude, complexity, and magnificence of the ocean. This is the realm of Agwe
and LaSirene; this is the kind of power they wield. I look forward to honoring
them with you on Wednesday, 8/29!

Khouzhan Buddy here. Monday night, I will be doing the 3 Simbi ritual for Sister Candelaria and a few others. I will post pictures via facebook. I can't wait. It has been a while since I have done this ritual but I do hope for positive results. Of course I will also be calling on the Barron and Maman Brigitte, and of course our dear beloved Papa Legba to open the gate. Well that is about it from me.

I recently got back from a short trip to Las Vegas. Now I'm not a big gambler. I'll play the occasional slot and video poker machine to get my free drink, try to win back what I started with and move on. I know of a few people who thought, for sure, that LaSirene or Capitaine Agwe was their Met Tet! The Met Tet is the Lwa who rules your head. Maybe it's because our bodies are 70% water, or that many of our ancestors explored and relocated via boats — we are drawn to the sea. It may be a different Lwa who claims our head, but this couple has a place in all our hearts.
Spellmaker's online ritual this month is dedicated to Capitaine Agwe and LaSirene. Please join us Wednesday, August 29, at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time.
There are songs, poems and museums dedicated to sailors of every type, and shell designs found everywhere. Pirates and Mermaids are popular these days, with festivals to celebrate their lore. I recently acquired a replica of a rum measure from the days when it was part of a sailor's ration.
Summer is a time that we think about the beach and sailing. In a more practical matter, the end of summer is when sea-themed items are on clearance in craft, candle, and other stores. It's a great time to find items for your altar. Capitaine Agwe and LaSirene are also perfect candidates for what I call the "stealth" altar. You can honor them with an arrangement of objects that can just look like typical home decor.
LaSirene's Aquamarine Shoals Bath is a wonderful way to honor her and receive her blessings. Agouer Royal Commanding Oil could certainly come in handy. Jewelry consecrated to Capitaine Agwe and LaSirene will keep their power with you as you wear them.

As our ritual to Capitaine Agwe and LaSirene is coming up, I wanted to share a post Mambo wrote on her blog! It is a recipe for a delicious New Orleans stew that can be prepared ritualistically, calling on Agwe (also spelled Agouer) to bring financial help into one's home. It is not a substitute for the 9-Day Big Money Spellkit, but it is something you can do and share with Agwe!

New Orleans Voodoo Lucky Penny Stew
1 quart boiling water
1 cup beef stew meat
4 cups cut up cabbage
1 large white onion, chopped
2 large tomatoes, chopped
1 cup fresh spinach, washed and torn into small pieces
1/2 cup raisins
1/4 cup garlic powder
1/4 cup onion powder
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon salt
1 bay leaf
1/2 cup dark red wine
1 green candle*
3 shiny pennies*
*Before beginning your cooking, set up a green candle in the kitchen and surround it with 3 shiny pennies. Light the candle and say, "Hey, Legba, open the gate, let my words carry to the other side. Thank you." Pause a moment. Then say, "Capitaine Agouer (pronounced "ah-ghwAY"), I humbly ask that you help me in providing for my family, myself, and others that may be in need." Then begin your food preparation with your petition in mind. Keep your petition in mind and honor Capitain Agouer during the preparation of the food.
Add all ingredients except the meat, cabbage, spinach, and raisins to the pot of boiling water and reduce to a simmer. Add in the meat and simmer for 10 minutes. Add in the rest of the ingredients and cook for 40 minutes at a low simmer. Turn off flame and add 1/2 cup red wine to pot and stir. Remove the bay leaf before serving. Serve with black eyed peas to insure prosperity.
BEFORE YOU EAT: Before you eat the stew, take 1/2 cup out and put it in a pretty paper cup or bowl. Place it in front of the burning candle as an offering to Capitaine Agouer. After the meal, take the food offering and the three pennies outside and leave it under a tree. Stamp the ground three times with your foot and say, "Blessings and thanks to you Capitaine Agouer."
