In writing a ritual for our recent group projects, our team used a progression of three songs to not just enhance a series of meditations, but to carry us through a transition of moods and thought... from facing our issues and presenting them to the Lwa with which we were working, to turning our concerns over to the Lwa and accepting their help, to finally being freed from our problems and able to look forward to a better future.
Being a bit of an audiophile, I realized that this usage of music could apply outside the context of this specific ritual. Why not use this same tactic in other rituals and spellwork? Simply choose three songs according to the following criteria:
1) The first would be a song which describes the kind of problems you're facing (for example, if you're working on a love case, a good old-fashioned torch song would do); alternately, you could choose a song which you think would appeal to the particular Lwa with which you're working (for example, a song about the sea for Agwe or La Sirene), to "get their attention."
2) The second would be something more hopeful... a song about working on a problem, or possible solutions to the particular problem you want solved. If your first song was about being lonely, you would now choose a song about meeting someone special, or trying to catch someone's attention. Or, if you can't find a good song that fits for this step, and you already chose a good "problem" song for the first one, you could now use a song appropriate for the Lwa whose help you are seeking.
3) Your third and final song would be a song which illustrates how you will feel once your petitions have been answered. If you're working on a money problem, you would choose a song about being wealthy. If you're working on a love case, select a song about being deliriously happy with the one you love.
Once you've chosen your songs, play them in the above order. As you play the first song, meditate or speak to the Lwa about the problems you are bringing to them. Think about how you feel, and why you want or need the help of the Lwa in solving your problem.
As you move on to the second song, meditate on turning your problem over to the Lwa and letting them help you. Think or speak about possible solutions, or describe specific scenarios in which the help you seek could be applied. Concentrate on the ways in which the Lwa with whom you are working would be most likely to help, according to his or her particular nature and sphere of influence.
Finally, as the third song plays, imagine that your problem has been solved and your goal has been reached. Picture yourself as you want to be; think or talk about how you will feel and how grateful you will be to the Lwa who has helped you. Finish on a positive note, seeing yourself successful in your endeavor.
The best thing about this little "medley of thought" is that you don't even need to set up a spell or ritual to try it! You could put a special playlist together and play it during your commute to work, having a little conversation with the Lwa while you travel down the highway. It's a handy way to fit a little spiritual work in on days when you're just too busy to sit down at an altar.
You've already chosen to rewrite your life's script with the help of the Lwa... so why not add your own soundtrack, too?
Ayibobo!
