The holiday season is almost over, but in its aftermath it leaves a reminder which will no doubt stay with us for a while longer: leftovers. For most of us, our refrigerators, pantries, and closets are filled with ‘em: leftover turkey, cookies, festive beverages, wrapping paper, ribbons… With this in mind, I thought it would be an opportune time to talk about another kind of leftovers: the magickal kind!
After completing a few spells or other kits from Spellmaker, you’re bound to wind up with a few leftover items – extra oil, some unused herbs. What to do with them? Well, one thing you should not do is let them go to waste! These items have been consecrated by Mambo Sam to enhance their power – sometimes generally (as in the case of candle magick kits which might be used for a variety of purposes) and sometimes very specifically (as in the case of spell kits). And if, like many of us, you brush the herbs off your candles or love doll at the end of a session and re-use them throughout the kit, they have probably absorbed quite a bit of the energy and intentions you’ve put into that spell or kit, making them even more powerful and “attuned” to you and your goals.
Here are some ways to put those leftovers to good use:
- Dab some of the oil on yourself to draw in the love or luck you are trying to attract.
- Spread some oil where the object of your spellwork is likely to touch it, or sprinkle some herbs where he/she will walk through them.
- Put a few drops of oil and/or a pinch of herbs in your bathwater.
- Anoint a gris-gris bag with leftover oil (especially if the gris-gris bag came from the same spell kit as the oil!).
- Use leftover oil and herbs to anoint and dress a taper or votive candle in a color appropriate to the situation, and burn the candle while you meditate, speak with the Lwa, or chant with a gris-gris bag. If you use store-bought candles, make sure the color penetrates the entire candle; don’t use the type which consists of white wax dipped in a coating of colored wax.
- Place a picture of the target of your spellwork in a plastic sheet protector or under glass in a picture frame, or laminate it (some self-serve copy & print shops have laminating machines). Draw a cross (+) on the picture with oil and/or sprinkle it with herbs, then speak to the target of your spellwork, meditate on what you want to happen, or place the picture on your altar while you work with your love doll or a candle magick kit.
When using up those leftovers, there are a few important rules to remember:
- Always use leftover items for the same goal for which they were originally meant. Don’t use oils from an old love spell when working on a new HD, for example. Think of the use of these items as a continuation of the work from which they were left over.
- Don’t mix different types of oils or herbs together in a single container. You may use more than one at a time, if they’re being used for the same goal (the usual rule is to use no more than 3 at a time), but keep them in separate bottles, bags, boxes, etc.
- Similarly, don’t mix the same herbs or oils together if they were originally used for much different purposes. In other words, if you used a Red Mummy candle on your HD, and later used a Red Mummy to improve communication between you and a difficult sibling, don’t mix the hyssop from the first RM kit with the hyssop from the second. Label your items or keep them in color-coded containers to prevent mix-ups.
So, as we head into a brand-new year, here's wishing you all love, luck, happines, and success in your endeavors -- magickal and otherwise!
Ayibobo!
