Autumn Leaves
Originally in French, English Lyrics by Johnny Mercer and Music by Joseph Kosma
The falling leaves drift by my window
The falling leaves of red and gold
I see your lips, the summer kisses
The sunburned hands I used to hold
Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I'll hear old winter's song
But I miss you most of all, my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall
Can't imagine why I picked this one! It's a melancholy song, definitely a grown-up perspective of passively watching the leaves. We've all had the experience of musing over loss and missing somebody.
I was recently playing and making some photos in my yard, though, and reminded of a different perspective from childhood. There's a Facebook status going around "I go out of my way to step on a crunchy-looking leaf." Remember doing that? How about leaves raked into a pile and jumping in it? Walking through woods, where the leaves rustle but also add some padding to the ground. I remember picking up leaves that are especially colorful and beautiful, and ironing them between two sheets of waxed paper. It made sort of a suncatcher I could hang in a window.
Yes, the rain and wind can be miserable, but there is still so much of the trees and the fall we can enjoy and play with. Gran Bwa enjoys the company. Give it a try, and tell me how it goes!
Love, Khouzhan Lucy
