I'd like to revisit a topic I discussed two weeks ago ("It's All Connected...") by sharing another example of how noticing little coincidences and similarities has helped me incorporate service to both my Ancestors and Les Lois into everyday life.
I'd been told several times by Vonnie, an angel and spirit communicator I'd visited on a few occasions, that my maternal grandmother actively watches over me. I was quite young when Nana passed away, and, as the mother of eleven children, she has quite a lot of grandchildren here in the physical realm; still, whenever I've sought guidance through this gifted communicator -- even to contact a deceased pet -- my grandmother has "come through", waiting her turn to send some kind words and comfort my way. Since I've discovered Voodoo and set my feet firmly on this path of learning and spiritual discovery, I've learned how important our Ancestors are and how valuable their protection and guidance is; naturally, my maternal grandmother is one of the first I call upon when I'm in need of help or just want to express my gratitude.
With so many mouths to feed, Nana spent a great deal of time cooking and baking. When my mother grew up and left home, she brought many of these recipes with her (scaled down for a smaller family, of course!). One of Nana's favorite cookie recipes is also a favorite of mine, and one of many that my mother and I bake around Christmastime. It's a wonderful treat for any time of the year, though (it freezes well)... and (here comes the coincidence!) it just happens to contain one of the favorite foods of our dear Papa Legba. Therefore, baking these cookies is a great way to honor my grandmother, and the finished products make excellent offerings for both!
Coconut Oatmeal Cookies
- 1 1/2 cups flour
- 1 tsp. baking powder
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 1 egg
- 1/2 tsp. vanilla
- 1 cup oatmeal
- 1 cup flaked coconut
Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. In separate bowl, cream together sugar, brown sugar, butter and shortening; add egg and vanilla. Add flour mixture. Fold in oatmeal and coconut.
Shape dough into small balls and place on greased cookie sheet; flatten with fork. Bake at 350o F for 12 to 15 minutes.
Enjoy! Lots of love,
Khouzhan Phoenix ♥
