No More Itchy Scalp

Lots of styling products (as well as air pollution and climate) can leave a film on our hair that removes moisture and dulls shine. Dairy products such as plain yogurt and even sour cream and help to reverse this damage.

Massage 1/2 of a cup of sour cream or plain yogurt into damp hair. Let the sour cream or yogurt sit for about 20 minutes, rinse it out with warm water, and then shampoo your hair as usual. This treatment can be applied every other week.

Now that it's getting colder, a lot of us are dealing with frizzy hair issues. Here's an easy to make at home hair remedy that will fix that frizz!

Avocado has a ton of health benefits; not to mention it works wonders on frizzy hair! The oils in avocados (which are light and moist like our own skin oils) and proteins add nutrients to smooth and weigh down unruly hair.

Mash up half of an avocado and massage it into clean, damp hair. Let it sit for 15 minutes and then rinse out with warm water. To add even more moisture, combine 1-2 tablespoons of sour cream or mayonnaise to your mashed up avocado. You can apply this treatment every two weeks!

Hydrate Your Hair with Honey

Colder weather always seems to dry out my hair. Therefore, I found a Do It Yourself hair conditioner that you can make at home that really helps to rehydrate your hair:

Hydrate with Honey

Massage a half of cup of honey into clean, damp hair. Let it sit for about 20 minutes and then rinse out with warm water. You can also add 2 tablespoons of olive oil to loosen the honey to apply it a little easier. For very dry hair, you can mix either 2 tablespoons of avocado or an egg yolk into the honey. This will help to replenish the keratin protein bonds in your hair.

Hair Care Tips for Happy and Healthy Hair

Winter is coming which means colder weather is on the way for many of us. Colder temperatures can stress and dry out our hair. Below are a few hair care tips to ensure your hair remains happy and healthy through the winter season:

1. Blow Dry: When drying your hair, use the warm setting on your blow dryer instead of the highest heat setting. This will keep your hair from being damaged by too much heat. In addition, hold the dryer 6-8 inches from your hair and point the airflow down to prevent frizzing.
2. Long Locks: Taking care of long hair requires frequent trims every 6-8 weeks. Conditioning the ends of your hair every other day will help your hair to hold in moisture and prevent it from drying out.
3. Curly Hair: You can revive your curls with a dry shampoo. Simply spritz your hair and run your fingers through it as if pulling it up into a ponytail.
4. Lose Those Bad Habits: Daily stress, bad eating habits, and smoking can cause your hair to become dull and prone to breakage.
5. Hair Brush Know-How: Use a natural-bristle brush when brushing your hair. Natural-bristle brushes are softer and more flexible and won’t damage your hair.
6. Avoid Breakage: Your hair is its most fragile when it’s wet. Avoid excessive brushing or combing until your hair is almost dry.
7. Reduce Frizz: Once you have conditioned your hair, rinse it with cold water. Rinsing your hair with cold water will help to seal the cuticle; making it harder for moisture to enter the hair follicle which can cause your hair to frizz.
8. Straight Hair: If you straighten your hair, use an anti-frizz serum to create a moisture barrier and add a heat protectant to prevent your hair from being damaged while using a straight iron or when styling.
9. Add Some Volume: Spritz a volumizing spray at your roots when your hair is dry, then flip your hair over and blow-dry it. You can then smooth out any stray strands with a brush.

Deep Condition

You know when your hair feels like straw? It is not soft or shiny and it is very difficult to style or take care of. There is a very easy solution to this problem; deep condition once a week. It is not expensive either. Whatever conditioner you use, apply it to your dry hair until saturated. Put a shower cap on, or do what I do, and use plastic wrap on your hair. 

Do some busy work; there is always a drawer that needs straightening, or something that needs to be ironed. Rinse out after a half an hour. Style as usual. 

This will help with breakage and frizz. And it is cheap, cheap, cheap.

More Home Hair Remedies

Recently I wrote about some homemade hair remedies you could make at home. Here are some additional home hair remedies for even more hair types:

Oily Hair: Many people struggle with oily or greasy hair.

Treatment: Add a tablespoon of cornmeal or cornstarch into an empty salt shaker and sprinkle onto dry hair and scalp. After 10 minutes, brush out with a paddle hairbrush. Treatment can be applied every other day.

Frizzy Hair: Frizzy hair can be unruly and hard to style and is often due to climate and styling products.

Treatment: Mash half of an avocado and massage it into clean, damp hair. Let it sit for 15 minutes and then rinse with warm water. To add even more moisture to your hair, combine 2 tablespoons sour cream or mayonnaise to the avocado and apply to clean, damp hair then rinse out. Treatment can be applied every two weeks.

Residue-Ridden Hair: Styling products can leave residue on those lovely locks making hair difficult to style.

Treatment: Combine 2 tablespoons baking soda with a small amount of water until a thick paste forms. Massage the mixture into damp hair and let sit for 15 minutes. Rinse with warm water and then shampoo hair. Treatment can be applied every two weeks.

Home Hair Remedies

Below are some inexpensive, easy to make home remedies for all types of hair:

Dull Hair: Air pollution and styling products can leave a film on your hair that reduces your hair’s moisture and dulls your hair’s shine.

Treatment: Massage ½ cup of either yogurt or sour cream into damp hair and let it sit for twenty minutes. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and then shampoo as normal. You can use this treatment every other week.

Itchy Scalp: Itchy, flakey scalps can be brought on by stress, poor diet, and climate.

Treatment: Combine two tablespoons lemon juice, two tablespoons olive oil, and two tablespoons of water. Massage into damp scalp and let sit for 20 minutes. Rinse and shampoo your hair as normal. You can use this treatment every other week.

Limp or Fine Hair: Adding body to limp or fine hair can add shine and make hair easier to style.

Treatment: Mix ½ cup flat beer with one teaspoon light canola oil and a raw egg. Apply to clean damp hair and let it sit for 15 minutes. Rinse with cool water. You can use this treatment every other week.

Dry or Sun-Damaged Hair: Hard water, sun overexposure, flat irons, or even blow dryers can dry out your hair.

Treatment: Massage ½ cup of honey into clean damp hair. Let it sit for 20 minutes and then rinse with warm water. For extremely sun-damaged hair, you can mix the honey with one-two tablespoons of avocado or egg yolk to help replenish keratin protein bonds that the sun can attack. This treatment can be applied once a month.

Fuzzy Hair is for sheep not people!!!!

It is high humidity time here on the East coast and I am resembling Gilda Radnor at this very moment.  All the straightening devices and hot rollers in the world don't help any one.  There are very expensive options, but who has that kind of money.   Here is my solution to this age old problem.  Deep condition your hair once a week after shampooing.  I use conditioner I have and wrap plastic wrap around my head.  Yes it is beautiful...  I leave it on for about an hour than rinse well.  Don't rewash.  Dry it if you want to, other wise let it go, when it is dry, pull it back into a pony tail or bun.  If you have short hair than muss it up with gel, and go.  XOXO Khouzhan Ann
