Spring is in the air and has already arrived for most of us. If you're ready to cut some of those spring flowers from your garden and enjoy them indoors, below are five simple steps you can use to ensure your flowers remain beautiful for as long as possible:
- Remove Foliage: Remove any leaves from the stems that will be covered by water. Doing so will ensure your water remains fresh and does not begin to mold.
- Cut the Stems at an Angle: When you are ready to put your flowers in water, you will want to cut the stems at an angle to ensure they can easily drink water. Cutting flowers straight across the bottom limits the amount of water each flower can drink.
- Us a Knife: Use a knife when cutting the stems at an angle instead of scissors; scissors will smash the stems and cause the flowers to not drink properly.
- The Three Second Rule: Once you have cut the stems makes sure you place them in water within three seconds so they can begin drinking water; otherwise, they will drink in air instead.
- Change the Water: Change the water daily to ensure your flowers always have the freshest water. If you received a preservative packet with your purchase you can add a quarter of the packet to the water each time you change the water.
And that’s it! Now your can enjoy your cut flowers for as long as possible!
